Just steps from the back door, this petite pool design beckons you to take a dip and unwind. Shrouded by palms, this backyard oasis has an air of exclusivity. Designer Jenn Feldman tells us it was difficult to fit a pool into this backyard given regional restrictions about property lines. She also installed a swimming jet so the occupant could still do "laps" and also comfortably hang out on the low pool bar with a refreshment in tow.
Indoor-Outdoor Backyard Pool
Striped poufs serve as footrests for a pair of white chairs or additional seating for a crowd. This curvy pool is ready for a crowd—both in and out of the water. Cozy up to the outdoor bar on an aluminum stool, or take a break from the sun on the cabana’s comfy sectional.
Construct a Freeform Infinity Pool
Part design feature, part backyard treat, this stunning pool is one with the surrounding landscape. A bed of roses and perfectly manicured shrubs frame the perimeter of the yard in elegance, while water from a rounded shallow pool cascades into the main swimming area. In a backyard by designer Nickey Kehoe, the pool features deep teal square mosaic tiles for a calming effect. Clay tiles around the exterior along with the brick patio and terracotta shingle roof add warmth and contrast. Enhance the landscape even further by selecting a pool that blends in with its surrounding.
Experiment with Freeform Pools
A pair of generous sofas face each other on the poolside terrace, great for catching up with friends or taking in the mountain views. It's cheerful and unique without being overly eccentric. Classic white pillars surround this pool, while the glass structure above paves the way for light to seep through and reflect on its surface. While you'll usually find swim-up pool bars at resorts, this doesn't mean they have to be reserved for these spaces. They're perfect for entertaining guests at home, too. A classic T-shape is great for those with an artsy mind.
While we don’t have plans for a backyard pool, I don’t rule it out. The issue is we live in a climate where we can realistically use it three to five months out of the year, which isn’t very much. If we lived in a hot climate, we’d definitely have a pool.
Highlight a Vanishing Edge
I love looking at the photos and can’t wait to one day to hire a custom pool builder to get a luxury swimming pool put into my backyard. This small backyard pool is all about the landscape design. Check out the rock work and waterfall flowing into the pool. Notice the elevated lounging area overlooking the pool as well. By island pool I refer to a pool patio not fully attached to the patio off the house.
Elegant Outdoor Living
Lap pools are skinny and long in a rectangular shape designed for swimming laps. These aren’t terribly common, but for people who swim primarily for exercise, they’re a good option. You can easily use a lap pool as a regular pool too.
Plunge Pool With Deck
A large shallow step serves as both entry into the pool as well as a refreshing sunbathing platform for those who want the best of both worlds. Complete with a pink floatie and a hot tub, this backyard spa is just one component of a sprawling outdoor living area. A poolside cabana offers al fresco dining while a built-in daybed provides the opportunity for a siesta. Adirondack chairs encircling a fire pit are the perfect place to roast s’mores and kick back at the end of the day. Pretend as though you live at a resort full-time with a pool inspired by your favorite getaway. Just take it from this Los Angeles home by designer Leanne Ford.

This company builds and installs shipping container pools. If you don’t like chlorine and other chemicals used to keep water clean, you can opt for a salt-water pool. If you live in a colder climate, an indoor pool is a great option. The downside, of course, is it’s not nearly as nice when the weather is warm because who wants to be inside on a warm, sunny day? Yeah, we’re fortunate to have an amazing public pool with zero-entry and wave sessions. I still remember like it was yesterday my glimpse of the pool.
A flagstone pool surround and upper patio provide continuity. Why have only one infinity pool when you can have several levels of infinity pools in a tiered stack? The raised design can also be a good way to separate a jacuzzi and a swimming pool. We think it's even especially brilliant when it overlooks a cool landscape feature, like the life-size chessboard in this backyard designed by Ken Fulk.
The vertical stem in this design by David Turner Studio is smaller and lesser in width. All-white, including round pendant lights, steal the show in this indoor pool layout by Leanne Ford Interiors.
In fact, that’s a fairly small pool with an embedded attached hot tub.
